Preparing for the Fees of International Travel

If your main worry concerning your upcoming trip is about travel insurance, you might be going about your thinking altogether incorrectly. That’s because additional fees are the things that might just make or break your vacation. This is particularly so if your budget is tight, as is often the case. So what kinds of fees are there to consider when next you’re traveling? That depends on where you’re going.

Say your travel plans involve wanting to drive a motorcycle across sections of the Pan-American highway in South America. The gas is cheap, both because motorcycles offer good mileage, and because many oil-producing nations subsidize their citizen’s fuel expenses by keeping gas cheap. But expenses crop up out of the blue if you haven’t done your research. Crossing country borders is notorious for being expensive in that it often takes additional money to talk your way out of ‘infractions’ that border patrol will find.

Beyond seeming exercises in extortion, there are other issues that can cost money. Sometimes bridges and other roads charge inordinate fees for crossings. Sometimes, as at the Darien Gap, there is no bridge. Alternate means of crossing the water are necessary, such as hiring a boat to shuttle your transport, or even flying it across the water. How about stomach bugs? Those are as predictable as rain in a rain forest when traveling in third world nations. The drugs to combat the symptoms don’t always come cheap, unless you’re able to stick with simple over the counter medications. From transport to health to other seemingly small issues, fees crop up during travel. Plan for this, and it will go smooth!
