De-stressing by Getting Away

Most of us think of a vacation as a slightly decadent “guilty pleasure.”  Yet vacations are an important time for recharging our biological and emotional batteries, de-stressing and reassessing where we are in our lives and frankly, taking a look at what it’s all about.

Looked at from this perspective, a vacation is a very healthy way to make ourselves better able to lead a productive and enjoyable life. Yet many of still feel a strange kind of guilt about “getting away.” If you are feeling “vacation guilt”–it’s important to take a look at this issue and sort out where these feelings are coming from, and frankly, give yourself a break.

There is ample evidence pointing to the good health effects of vacations. We all know that just getting away from our daily responsibilities makes us feel better. Yet the hard-charged American work ethic can make us feel that getting away is a luxury we simply can’t afford. According to a recent poll, a large percentage of Americans find that getting away is something they just can’t make the time for.  For others, using up vacation time at work is a scary option during these times of heightened economic stress.

Yet robbing yourself of mental downtime, away from work, can lead to other problems. Stress has a toxic effect on our bodies if it is not addressed.

According to experts at Webmd.com, workplace stress is a serious issue that shouldn’t be ignored. Too much stress can lead to situations that can impact the heart and our overall health. Given all this, a vacation isn’t something to feel guilty over—it must be celebrated.
